Why Visit Kanazawa
Kanazawa escaped wartime bombing, preserving one of Japan's most complete Edo-era cityscapes. Its crown jewel, Kenroku-en, consistently ranks among the country's three most beautiful landscape gardens. The city's samurai and geisha districts feel remarkably authentic — wooden lattice facades, narrow stone-paved lanes, and working tea houses that have poured matcha for centuries.
Positioned on the Sea of Japan coast, Kanazawa offers seafood that rivals Tokyo's Tsukiji at a fraction of the price. The city also punches above its weight in contemporary art, with the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art drawing over two million visitors annually. Think of it as Kyoto's quieter, more affordable sibling.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (early – mid April) — Cherry blossoms frame Kenroku-en and the castle grounds. Free night illuminations make evenings magical.
Autumn (mid November – early December) — Kenroku-en's yukitsuri (rope canopies protecting trees from snow) go up in November, creating Kanazawa's most iconic seasonal image.
Winter (December – February) — Snow-dusted gardens and fresh snow crab (kano-gani) season make winter surprisingly rewarding, despite grey skies.
Insider Tips
- Omicho Market opens early — arrive before 9 AM for the best seafood bowls (kaisen-don) without the midday queue.
- Higashi Chaya is the most photogenic geisha district, but Kazue-machi along the river is equally beautiful and far less crowded.
- Try gold-leaf soft serve — Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan's gold leaf, and the ice cream is more than a gimmick.
- The Nagamachi samurai district is free to wander. Duck into the Nomura-ke residence for one of the finest small gardens in the city.
