Why Visit Shirakawago
Shirakawago is a UNESCO World Heritage village nestled in the remote Shogawa River valley of Gifu Prefecture. Its gassho-zukuri farmhouses — named for their steep thatched roofs that resemble hands pressed together in prayer — were built to withstand the region's punishing snowfall, some exceeding two metres per winter.
Despite its fame, the village remains a living community. Around 600 residents still call Shirakawago home, and many farmhouses operate as minshuku (family-run guesthouses) where visitors can sleep on futons beneath those iconic roofs. The Shiroyama Observatory provides the classic panoramic view, while smaller hamlets like Ainokura in neighbouring Gokayama offer the same architecture with a fraction of the visitors.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (January – February) — The village is blanketed in deep snow and illuminated on select evenings, creating scenes straight from a fairy tale. Reservation-only light-up events are the most coveted tickets in Japanese tourism.
Spring (April – May) — Cherry blossoms and fresh green rice paddies frame the farmhouses. Far fewer visitors than winter, with mild mountain weather.
Autumn (October – November) — Vivid red and gold foliage surrounding the thatched roofs makes this the most photogenic season after winter.
Insider Tips
- Stay overnight in a gassho-zukuri minshuku to experience the village after the day-trippers leave — book months ahead for winter dates.
- Winter light-up dates require a lottery reservation entered well in advance. Check the official Shirakawago website for the application window.
- Combine with a visit to Gokayama's Ainokura village for a quieter, equally authentic gassho-zukuri experience.
- Walk past the main Ogimachi area to Wada House and Kanda House — the oldest and best-preserved farmhouses are further from the bus stop.
