Takayama

Tucked into the mountains of the Japanese Alps, Takayama feels like stepping back in time. Its beautifully preserved Sanmachi Suji district is lined with dark-wood merchant houses, sake breweries marked by cedar balls, and craft shops that have operated for generations. The city earned the nickname “Little Kyoto” for its Edo-era streetscape, but its alpine setting gives it a character all its own.

Takayama is also the gateway to the thatched-roof villages of Shirakawa-go. The morning markets along the Miyagawa River bustle with local farmers selling mountain vegetables, miso paste, and handmade crafts. Add in Hida beef — rivalling Kobe in marbling — and atmospheric festivals with ornate floats, and Takayama delivers one of Japan's most authentic cultural experiences.
