Why Visit Nagoya
Nagoya is Japan's fourth-largest city and the industrial powerhouse behind Toyota, yet it's far more than factories. The reconstructed Nagoya Castle, with its golden shachi (dolphin-fish) roof ornaments, anchors a city steeped in samurai heritage — the region produced three of Japan's great unifiers: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Nagoya also boasts one of Japan's most distinctive regional cuisines, known collectively as “Nagoya meshi.” From miso-katsu and hitsumabushi (grilled eel three ways) to tebasaki chicken wings and kishimen flat noodles, eating your way through the city is a highlight. Its central location on the Shinkansen line makes it a natural hub for exploring the wider Chubu region.

Noritake Garden

Best Time to Visit
Spring (late March – April) — Nagoya Castle's 1,000 cherry trees bloom spectacularly, and the Atsuta Shrine grounds are peaceful for hanami picnics.
Autumn (October – November) — Tokugawa Garden's foliage is stunning, and comfortable temperatures make it ideal for walking the city.
Avoid mid-summer — Nagoya is notoriously hot and humid from June to August, though summer festivals and the Nagoya Sumo Tournament (July) offer compensation.
Insider Tips
- Order hitsumabushi at Atsuta Horaiken near the shrine — eat it three ways as locals do: plain, with condiments, then as ochazuke with broth.
- The Osu Kannon flea market (18th and 28th of each month) is a treasure trove of antiques, kimono, and vintage goods.
- Nagoya's morning coffee culture (“morning service”) offers a full breakfast free with the price of a coffee — Komeda Coffee is the iconic chain.
- The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry is world-class and far more engaging than it sounds — interactive looms and robot demos included.
