Why Visit Hakuba
Hakuba Valley hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics and remains Japan's premier alpine destination. Backed by the dramatic 3,000-metre peaks of the Northern Japanese Alps, the valley's ten interconnected ski resorts offer terrain for every level — from gentle beginner slopes to steep, powder-filled backcountry. Annual snowfall regularly exceeds 11 metres, delivering some of the most consistent conditions in Asia.
Hakuba transforms in summer into a world-class hiking and mountain-biking destination. The Happo-One gondola lifts visitors to alpine flower meadows and panoramic ridge trails, while river rafting, canyoning, and paragliding fill the warmer months with adventure. The village atmosphere blends Japanese hospitality with an international mountain-town vibe, complete with craft breweries, onsen, and farm-to-table dining.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – March) — Peak ski season with reliable deep powder. January and February offer the coldest temperatures and lightest snow. Night skiing is available at several resorts.
Summer (July – September) — Alpine hiking at Happo-One and Tsugaike, mountain biking, and the Hakuba International Music Festival. Temperatures stay comfortable at altitude.
Autumn (October) — The three-tiered Happo-One gondola offers front-row seats to Japan's most dramatic mountain foliage, with snow-capped peaks above and golden larch forests below.
Insider Tips
- Cortina and Norikura resorts get the deepest powder in the valley — head there on big snow days for the best tree skiing.
- End a ski day at Mimizuku onsen or the Hakuba Happo hot springs — nothing beats soaking sore muscles with mountain views overhead.
- In summer, the Tsugaike Nature Park boardwalk trail is flat and family-friendly, with alpine wildflowers and panoramic views at 1,900 metres.
- Don't miss the Hakuba Brewing Company — the craft beer scene is surprisingly strong, with seasonal brews that pair well with local venison and soba.
