Why Visit Hiroshima
Hiroshima is a city defined not by its tragedy but by its extraordinary resilience. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum deliver one of the most powerful experiences in all of Japan, yet step beyond and you'll find a vibrant, forward-looking city with tree-lined rivers, thriving food culture, and one of the friendliest atmospheres in the country.
The city is also the gateway to Miyajima Island, home to the iconic “floating” torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Between the sobering history, stunning island scenery, and some of Japan's best okonomiyaki (Hiroshima-style, with layered noodles), a visit here adds depth and contrast to any itinerary.
Key Neighbourhoods

Covered shopping arcade stretching 500 metres with boutiques, cafés, and street performers
Nagarekawa
Hiroshima's nightlife hub — izakaya, bars, and okonomiyaki restaurants packed into narrow lanes
Shukkeien Area
Edo-period strolling garden, art museums, and the castle grounds nearby
Hiroshima Station
Transport hub with Shinkansen access, Ekie shopping complex, and Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium
Miyajima Guchi
Ferry terminal district — the jump-off point for Miyajima Island, just 10 minutes offshore
Best Time to Visit
Spring (late March – mid April) — Cherry blossoms along the Peace Boulevard and on Miyajima Island create a serene contrast to the historic sites.
Autumn (October – November) — Miyajima's Momijidani (Maple Valley) turns brilliant red, making it one of the top foliage spots in western Japan.
August 6 — The annual Peace Memorial Ceremony draws visitors from around the world. The lantern-floating ceremony at dusk is deeply moving.
Insider Tips
- Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki uses layered noodles and cabbage — try the local favourite at Okonomimura, a building with over 20 stalls.
- Visit Miyajima at high tide for the classic “floating” torii view, and stay for low tide to walk right up to its base.
- Allow at least 90 minutes for the Peace Memorial Museum — the renovated exhibits are deeply detailed and thought-provoking.
- Rent a bicycle to explore the city's six rivers — Hiroshima is flat and bike-friendly with dedicated cycling paths along the waterfront.
