Why Visit Matsumoto
Matsumoto is home to one of Japan's most striking castles. Matsumoto Castle's jet-black walls and six-storey keep, reflected in its surrounding moat with the Japanese Alps as a backdrop, make it one of only five castles designated a National Treasure. Built in the late 16th century, it's the oldest surviving five-storey castle donjon in Japan.
The city itself is a cultured, walkable base for alpine adventures. Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori streets are lined with Meiji-era storehouses converted into cafés, craft galleries, and soba restaurants. Matsumoto is also a gateway to the Kamikochi alpine valley and the Northern Alps — and in August, the internationally renowned Saito Kinen Festival fills the city with world-class classical music.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (mid April) — Cherry blossoms frame Matsumoto Castle perfectly, and the moat reflects both the black keep and pink petals. Night illuminations run during peak bloom.
Summer (July – August) — Gateway to Kamikochi, one of Japan's most spectacular mountain valleys. The Saito Kinen Festival brings international musicians to the city.
Winter (January – February) — Snow-dusted castle views and proximity to ski resorts like Hakuba. The Matsumoto Castle Ice Sculpture Festival in February adds a magical touch.
Insider Tips
- Try Matsumoto's signature soba noodles — the cold, clean alpine water produces some of Japan's best buckwheat noodles. Kobayashi is a local favourite.
- Walk Nakamachi-dori for beautifully restored kura (storehouses) with black-and-white namako walls — now housing craft shops and bakeries.
- The castle interior has extremely steep stairs (up to 61 degrees) — wear comfortable shoes and avoid heavy bags.
- Nawate-dori (“Frog Street”) is a quirky pedestrian lane with frog statues, antique shops, and taiyaki stands — a fun detour after the castle.
