Why Visit Gero
Gero Onsen is one of Japan's “three famous hot springs,” a title it has held since the Edo-period scholar Hayashi Razan ranked it alongside Arima and Kusatsu over 400 years ago. The town hugs the banks of the Hida River in the mountains of southern Gifu Prefecture, exuding the quiet, unhurried character of a classic Japanese onsen resort.
Gero's alkaline waters are prized for their silky texture, leaving skin remarkably smooth — earning the nickname “bijin no yu” (beauty bath). The compact town centre is easily explored on foot, with free public foot baths scattered along the riverside streets. A stay at one of Gero's traditional ryokan, complete with kaiseki dinner and private onsen, is the quintessential Japanese hot-spring experience.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – February) — The ideal season to soak in outdoor baths while snow falls around you. The Gero Onsen Hanabi Matsuri fireworks illuminate the river on select winter Saturday nights.
Spring (April – May) — Cherry blossoms along the Hida River and pleasant temperatures for strolling the town's foot-bath circuit.
Autumn (October – November) — Mountain foliage frames the valley town beautifully. Hida beef — Gifu's premium wagyu — is at its richest during the cooler months.
Insider Tips
- Buy the Yumeguri Tegata pass (¥1,300) for access to three participating ryokan baths — a great way to sample different onsen without overnight stays.
- The open-air riverside foot bath below Gero Bridge is free and open 24 hours — bring a small towel for drying off.
- Combine Gero with a day trip to Gujo Hachiman, a charming castle town known for its summer Bon Odori dance festival and crystal-clear waterways.
- Try Hida beef sushi served on your hand at stalls near Gero Onsen Shrine — a local speciality you won't find elsewhere.
