Why Visit Shiga Kogen
Shiga Kogen is Japan's largest linked ski area, sprawling across 21 interconnected resorts high in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. At elevations reaching 2,307 metres, it boasts some of the most reliable natural snowfall and longest seasons in the country — often staying open well into May.
Beyond winter, Shiga Kogen is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, blanketed in alpine wetlands, pristine ponds, and virgin beech forests. Summer hiking trails wind through landscapes that feel untouched, while the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park — home to the famous snow bathing macaques — is a year-round draw just down the valley.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – March) — Prime ski season with consistent powder snow. The 1998 Winter Olympics were held here, and the terrain suits all ability levels across 80+ runs.
Summer (June – August) — Cool highland temperatures make this a perfect escape from the lowland heat. Hiking around Shiga's high-altitude marshes and ponds is at its best.
Autumn (September – October) — Dramatic foliage sweeps across the highlands early, often peaking in mid-October — weeks ahead of lower elevations.
Insider Tips
- A single all-mountain lift pass covers all 21 resorts — one of the best-value ski passes in Japan.
- Stay in the nearby Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen villages for atmospheric ryokan accommodation with natural hot springs.
- Visit Jigokudani Monkey Park early in the morning to see the macaques before the crowds arrive — winter months offer the best bathing scenes.
- In summer, hike the Shiga Kogen Nature Trail loop to see over a dozen highland ponds, including the striking cobalt-blue Onuma Pond.
