Why Visit Kyoto
Kyoto served as Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years, from 794 to 1868. Today, the city preserves more than 2,000 temples and shrines, 17 of which hold UNESCO World Heritage status. Walking its streets, you move seamlessly between vermillion torii gates, quiet zen gardens, and centuries-old tea houses — all within reach of modern cafés and Michelin-starred restaurants.
Unlike Tokyo's towering skyline, Kyoto's beauty is intimate and layered. Narrow machiya townhouse lanes open onto grand temple complexes. Geiko and maiko still glide through the Gion district at dusk. In spring the city turns pale pink with cherry blossoms; in autumn, brilliant crimson maple canopies frame every shrine path.
Best Time to Visit
Cherry Blossom Season (late March – mid April) — Maruyama Park, the Philosopher's Path, and Daigo-ji burst into bloom. Book accommodation months ahead.
Autumn Foliage (mid November – early December) — Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do, and Kitano Tenmangu offer the most dramatic maple displays. Night illuminations at Kodai-ji are unforgettable.
Summer (June – August) brings festivals like Gion Matsuri (July) but also heat and humidity. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, perfect for temple visits without crowds.

- Visit popular temples at opening time (usually 8:30 – 9:00 AM) to beat tour groups.
- Rent a bicycle — Kyoto is flat and cycling is the fastest way to cover the eastern temple belt.
- Nishiki Market (“Kyoto's Kitchen”) is best explored before noon when ingredients are freshest.
- Don't skip lesser-known gems: Tofuku-ji's zen gardens, Daitoku-ji sub-temples, and Kurama onsen north of the city.
