Why Visit Inuyama
Inuyama is a compact castle town in Aichi Prefecture that punches far above its weight. Its crowning glory is Inuyama Castle, one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan and a designated National Treasure. Built in 1537, the four-storey wooden keep sits atop a bluff overlooking the Kiso River, offering a view that has remained essentially unchanged for nearly five centuries.
The town below the castle has been revitalised with care, its Honmachi Street now lined with small cafes, miso-glazed snack shops, and craft stores housed in restored machiya townhouses. Inuyama also hosts one of central Japan's most spectacular festivals — the Inuyama Matsuri — where towering three-tiered floats fitted with mechanical karakuri puppets parade through the streets.
Best Time to Visit
Early April (Inuyama Matsuri) — The first weekend of April brings the UNESCO-recognised festival with 13 ornate floats and cherry blossoms at their peak around the castle.
Spring & Autumn — Comfortable temperatures for walking the castle town. Autumn foliage at nearby Meiji-mura outdoor museum is superb.
Summer (June – October) — Evening ukai cormorant fishing on the Kiso River is a traditional spectacle, watched from wooden boats by lantern light.
Insider Tips
- Climb the steep original wooden stairs to Inuyama Castle's top floor for a panoramic view of the Kiso River, Gifu city, and on clear days, the Japanese Alps.
- Walk Honmachi Street slowly — try the dengaku (miso-grilled tofu), dango rice dumplings, and local craft beer along the way.
- Visit Meiji-mura, an open-air museum 20 minutes away with over 60 relocated Meiji-era buildings including the entrance hall of Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel.
- The Sanko Inari Shrine near the castle has a pink heart-shaped ema (votive tablet) that has made it a popular spot for couples.
