Why Visit Appi
Appi Kogen is a highland ski resort in the mountains of Iwate Prefecture, positioned as Tohoku's premier winter destination. Sitting at an elevation of around 900 metres in the northern Hachimantai range, Appi receives abundant dry powder snow and boasts 21 courses across varied terrain — from gentle beginner slopes to challenging mogul runs and tree-lined glades.
What sets Appi apart is its all-in-one resort design. Hotels, restaurants, onsen baths, and ski lifts are connected so guests rarely need to step outdoors except to ski. In the green season, the highlands become a base for hiking, mountain biking, and golf, with fields of alpine wildflowers and panoramic views across the Tohoku mountains stretching to the horizon.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – March) — Peak skiing from January to February with the driest powder. Night skiing under floodlights adds extra hours on the slopes.
Summer (July – August) — Cool highland temperatures, wildflower meadows, and outdoor activities including zip-lining and nature walks through beech forests.
Autumn (October) — Hachimantai's famous “Dragon Eye” pond and surrounding mountains display spectacular red and gold foliage at higher elevations.
Insider Tips
- Appi's ski-in, ski-out hotels mean zero shuttle buses — walk straight from your room to the gondola in minutes.
- After skiing, soak in the resort's onsen facilities. The outdoor rotenburo baths with views of snow-covered peaks are the highlight.
- Try Iwate's regional specialities at the resort restaurants, including wanko soba (challenge-style buckwheat noodles) and Maesawa beef.
- Multi-day lift passes offer significant discounts. Combine with accommodation packages for the best value, especially midweek.
