Akame Ninja Experience

1 tours available

Why Visit Akame

The Akame 48 Waterfalls in Nabari, Mie Prefecture, are a chain of cascades tumbling through a primeval forest gorge that once served as a secret training ground for Iga-ryu ninja. The name “Akame” — meaning “red eyes” — comes from a legend of a mystic who encountered a red-eyed ox deity in these mountains.

Walking the riverside trail, you pass waterfalls of every character: thundering curtain falls, delicate ribbon cascades, and deep emerald pools. The forest canopy is so dense that the gorge stays cool even in midsummer. Ninja history comes alive at the trailhead, where visitors can try shuriken throwing, obstacle courses, and stealth training in full ninja attire.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (November) — The gorge transforms into a tunnel of fiery maples reflected in the waterfall pools. Evening illumination events light up select cascades.

Summer (June – August) — The shaded gorge is naturally air-conditioned. Giant salamanders can occasionally be spotted in the crystal-clear streams.

Spring (April – May) — Fresh green foliage and swollen waterfalls from snowmelt create the most dramatic cascades of the year.
