April is spring proper across the main islands. Days are warm without being hot, nights are cool enough for a light jacket, and the rainy season is still two months away. Tokyo and the Kanto Region
The first week is full bloom, the second is petal-fall — the "sakura snow" that many Japanese consider the best moment of all — and from the third week the city turns bright green. Temperatures climb through the month; by the last week short sleeves work in the afternoon.
Kyoto and Osaka
Kansai peaks a day or two after Tokyo. Kyoto in the first week of April is the most photographed place in Japan, and behaves like it: the Philosopher's Path and Maruyama Park are packed from mid-morning. Go at 7am or after dark. Once the blossoms drop, the fresh maple leaves along the same paths are quietly spectacular and far less crowded.
Kanazawa, the Alps and Tohoku
This is where the blossoms go next. Kanazawa's Kenrokuen typically reaches full bloom in the first week of April — in 2026 it was around 6 April. Tohoku follows in the middle of the month, and Hirosaki Castle in Aomori, with its moat of petals, holds its festival from 23 April to 5 May 2027. Hokkaido and the South
Hokkaido is still shaking off winter at around 12°C, with cherry blossoms arriving at the very end of April and into May. Okinawa is already early summer at 24°C; the beaches open in April, though the sea is cool.

- 8–14 April — petal-fall and the shift north. The cities are still beautiful (rivers full of petals), prices ease slightly, and the front reaches the Alps and southern Tohoku. Takayama's Spring Festival (14–15 April) puts the yatai floats on the streets.
- 15–22 April — fresh green in the cities, blossoms in the north. The best-value week of the month for Tokyo and Kyoto. Sendai and northern Tohoku are in bloom.
- 23–28 April — Hirosaki and the pre-Golden Week calm. The Hirosaki festival opens on the 23rd; Hokkaido's first blossoms appear. Domestic travel ramps up in the last two days.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Japan?
It is the best month for first-time visitors, and the worst month for anyone who hates queues. Both things are true.
The case for April is simple: the weather is the most reliably pleasant of the year, the scenery peaks, the days are long, and everything is open. Nothing else in the calendar combines all four.
The case against is cost and crowds. Hotel rates in Tokyo and Kyoto in the first week of April can run double the February price; the famous hanami spots fill by 9am; and the month ends in Golden Week, when the entire country travels at once. If you can only travel in April, do it — but book six months out, and plan to be somewhere quiet by 29 April.
A useful middle path: arrive in the second or third week. You trade full bloom in the cities for petal-fall, fresh green, blossoms in Tohoku, noticeably lower prices and a fraction of the crowds.
Events and Dates in April 2027
- Hanami season (first half of the month in the cities) — picnics under the trees are a national institution. Ueno Park in Tokyo and Maruyama Park in Kyoto are the classic, rowdy versions; Shinjuku Gyoen is the calm one (no alcohol, entry fee, immaculate lawns).

Golden Week 2027: The Trap at the End of April
Golden Week 2027 runs Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May — Showa Day, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day on 3, 4 and 5 May, with a weekend in the middle. One day of leave on Friday 30 April turns it into a seven-day break for the whole country, and the whole country takes it.
For a foreign visitor this means: shinkansen seats sell out weeks ahead, popular ryokan are booked a year ahead, and prices in resort towns spike. City hotels, oddly, can be easier — Tokyo empties out as Tokyoites leave. Tokyo

Kyoto

Yoshino
A mountainside south of Nara covered in some 30,000 cherry trees that bloom in stages from bottom to top over the first half of April. The most extraordinary hanami in Japan, and reachable as a long day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.
Kanazawa and Takayama
Kenrokuen in the first week, Takayama's festival on the 14th–15th. Together with Shirakawa-go they make a strong four-day loop between Tokyo and Kyoto on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
Tohoku
Mid-to-late April is Tohoku's moment: Sendai, then Kakunodate's samurai district and its weeping cherries, then Hirosaki. Far fewer international visitors than the cities, and the blossoms come with mountain scenery and snow still on the peaks.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking late. First-week-of-April hotels in Kyoto go six months or more ahead. This is not an exaggeration.
- Arriving mid-April expecting full bloom in Kyoto. By then it is petal-fall; the full bloom has moved to Kanazawa and Tohoku. Follow it north or enjoy the green.
- Letting the trip drift into Golden Week. 29 April is a hard edge. Plan to be settled somewhere, or gone.
- Only visiting the famous parks at midday. Ueno at noon is a festival; Ueno at 7am is a garden.
- Packing for summer. Evenings are 9–10°C in the first half of the month.
