Ask a Japanese friend when you should visit and there is a good chance they will say May — with one condition attached. The month opens with the tail of Golden Week, the single most crowded domestic travel period of the year, and then, from around the 6th, turns into something close to ideal: warm but not hot, green everywhere, long days, and hotel prices that drop the moment the holiday ends.

Japan Weather in May 2027: What to Actually Expect

May is the last dry, mild month before the rainy season, and it feels like it. Days are warm enough for short sleeves by lunchtime and cool enough for a light layer in the evening; the humidity that defines Japanese summer has not arrived yet. Rain comes in occasional fronts rather than settling in. The one exception is Okinawa, whose rainy season typically begins in early May.

Tokyo and the Kanto Region

Tokyo in May is at its most pleasant. The parks are deep green after the blossom, the light is long, and walking days of ten kilometres feel easy. Golden Week empties the city of Tokyoites — which oddly makes the first days of May a good time to be in Tokyo itself — and after the holiday the hotel market resets to some of the lowest rates of the year.

Kyoto and Osaka

Kansai is a shade warmer than Tokyo. Kyoto's gardens are arguably better in May than in April: the maples are fresh and translucent, azaleas are out, and the moss temples in the west are at their greenest. Aoi Matsuri on 15 May is the city's great spring procession.

The Alps and Hokkaido

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is fully open, and in May the famous Snow Wall still towers up to 15 metres high along sections of the road. Hokkaido is in its spring — the last cherry blossoms in the first week, lilacs in Sapporo by the end of the month, and crucially no rainy season to follow.

Okinawa

The one region to think twice about. Okinawa's rainy season typically starts in early May and lasts until late June, so the islands are humid and showery for most of the month. The sea is warm enough to swim; the skies are not reliable.

Golden Week 2027: 29 April – 5 May

Golden Week 2027 runs from Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May — Showa Day, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day on 3, 4 and 5 May with a weekend in between. One day of leave on Friday 30 April makes it a seven-day break, and most of working Japan takes it. That means the first five days of May are the peak of the peak.

Trains: shinkansen seats for the holiday sell out weeks ahead. In 2026 every Nozomi ran all-reserved from 24 April to 6 May; expect a similar window in 2027 and book the moment reservations open, a month out.
Where it hurts: resort towns, ryokan, Hakone, Kamakura, Kyoto's big temples, theme parks, expressways.
Where it doesn't: central Tokyo and Osaka, which empty out; museums; anywhere reached by a reserved seat you already hold.
Children's Day (Wed 5 May): koinobori carp streamers over rivers nationwide — beautiful, and the one Golden Week sight worth building a morning around.

The Sweet Spot: 6–31 May

The day Golden Week ends, Japan changes. Domestic travellers go back to work, the shinkansen has empty seats again, and hotel prices in Kyoto and Hakone fall back to normal within about 48 hours. What remains is late spring at its best — and it lasts until the rainy season begins in early June.

For a first-time visitor who can choose their dates, the second half of May is one of the two or three best windows of the year: comparable weather to April, a fraction of the crowds, and some of the lowest prices between winter and autumn. The only thing you give up is the blossoms — and you gain the fresh green that many Japanese consider the finer season anyway.

Festivals and Flowers in May 2027

Hakata Dontaku (3–4 May) — Fukuoka's huge street parade, held every year on the same two days in the heart of Golden Week.
Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival (to 5 May) — the last of the season, with the castle moat carpeted in petals around the start of the month.
Kanda Matsuri (mid-May, odd-numbered years) — Tokyo's great shrine festival holds its full-scale grand procession in odd years, alternating with Sanno Matsuri. 2027 is a full year: expect the procession of mikoshi through Kanda, Nihonbashi and Akihabara on the weekend nearest 15 May.
Aoi Matsuri (15 May) — Kyoto's oldest festival, a Heian-era costume procession from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo shrines. One of Kyoto's three great festivals, alongside Gion in July and Jidai in October.
Sanja Matsuri (third weekend of May, 14–16 May 2027) — Asakusa Shrine's festival, and Tokyo's loudest: around a hundred mikoshi carried through the streets by roaring crews. Book Asakusa accommodation early or stay elsewhere and visit for the day.

Where to Go in Japan in May

Tokyo

Kanda and Sanja back to back make mid-May the best festival fortnight the capital has. Between them: the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Shinjuku Gyoen in full green, and evening walks that no longer require a jacket.

Kyoto and Nara

Aoi Matsuri on the 15th, then the moss gardens and fresh maples of Arashiyama and the northern hills. Nara's deer park in May is green and calm; the April crowds are gone.

The Alps: Tateyama, Takayama, Kamikochi

Hokkaido

The smart choice for the second half of May: spring flowers, no rainy season, and prices that have not yet climbed for the summer lavender crowds. Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate are all comfortable.

A Practical Two-Week Itinerary for May 2027

Built to start the day Golden Week ends and finish before the rainy season.

Days 1–4 — Tokyo (arrive 6–7 May). Prices have just dropped. Asakusa, Meiji Jingu, a day trip to Kamakura or Nikko; if you can stretch to the 14th–16th, Sanja Matsuri.
Day 5 — Hakone. Onsen night; Fuji is often clear on May mornings and the Shibazakura fields are a short detour.
Days 6–9 — Kyoto and Nara. Fresh-green temple gardens, Aoi Matsuri if your dates include the 15th, a day in Nara.
Days 10–11 — Osaka. Food, Osaka Castle park, an evening in Dotonbori.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Arriving on 1 May without reservations. Golden Week trains and ryokan are gone weeks ahead.
Leaving on 6 May. The best two weeks of the month start the day you would be flying home.
Planning Okinawa as a beach holiday. It is rainy season there from early May; go in July or wait for October.
Assuming a "spring" wardrobe. Afternoons reach 25°C; evenings drop to 14°C. Layers.
Missing the festivals by a day. Aoi is fixed on the 15th; Sanja is the third weekend; Kanda's procession only runs in odd years — 2027 is one.
