Japan Weather in March 2027: What to Actually Expect

March warms fast. The first week still feels like winter — cold mornings, bright dry days — while the last week can be genuinely mild. The other change is rain: after the dry winter, spring fronts start moving through, and Tokyo gets roughly double February's rainfall. It is not a wet month by Japanese standards, but pack for showers.

Tokyo and the Kanto Region

Early March in Tokyo is a continuation of February — bright, dry, cold enough for a coat. By the third week the plum blossoms have finished and the city is watching the sample cherry tree at Yasukuni Shrine, whose first flowers officially open the season. Pack for 8°C mornings and 17°C afternoons in the same day.

Kyoto and Osaka

Kansai runs on the same schedule as Tokyo, a day or two behind for blossoms. The Kyoto basin holds cold air, so mornings stay crisp longer than the daytime highs suggest. Osaka is marginally warmer and its Osaka Castle park is one of the best places in the country to see the first week of bloom.

Kyushu and the South

Fukuoka is usually the first major mainland city to see Somei Yoshino open. In 2026 its flowering came around 20 March, with full bloom around 29 March. If you want to see blossoms and cannot travel in the last week of March, Kyushu in the third week is the safest bet in the country.

Hokkaido and Tohoku

Still winter. Sapporo sits around 4°C by day, the snow festivals are over, and the ski resorts are in their quieter late season — often with excellent conditions and far fewer people than February. Cherry blossoms do not reach the north until late April.

Cherry Blossom Timing in March 2027

Here is the honest version of the calendar. No one can predict 2027 with precision before the first forecasts arrive in January; what follows is the long-run pattern plus the current best guess.

• Early February – 7 March: Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula. The early Kawazu-zakura variety, deep pink, a month ahead of everything else. The 2027 festival runs 6 February to 7 March.
• Mid to late March: Kyushu kicks off the main Somei Yoshino season. Fukuoka first, then Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Kagoshima.
• Around 24 March: Tokyo's average first bloom (kaika), with full bloom (mankai) around 31 March on the long-run averages. A tree stays in bloom for roughly 10–14 days from first opening, but peak viewing lasts only 5–7 days once full bloom is reached.
• 28 March – 5 April: the current forecast peak window for Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone and Osaka.
• April onward: Kanazawa and the Alps in the first week of April, Tohoku mid-to-late April, Hokkaido at the end of April and into May.

The planning rule that follows from this: if sakura is the point of the trip, land in the last week of March and stay into the first week of April, and split your nights between two cities that bloom a few days apart. Is March a Good Time to Visit Japan?

Yes, with one decision to make first: are you chasing the blossoms or avoiding the crowds they bring?

Early to mid-March is one of the best-value windows of the year. Prices are still at winter levels, the weather is improving daily, plum blossoms are out, and the big sights are calm. You will not see cherry blossoms in the cities, but you will see everything else without a queue.

The last week of March is the start of Japan's busiest fortnight. Hotel rates in Tokyo and Kyoto rise sharply, popular hanami parks fill from breakfast, and the shinkansen is busy. It is also, if the timing lands, one of the most beautiful weeks anywhere. Book early — the last week of March 2027 will be sold out in the good hotels months ahead.

The downside nobody mentions: late March is also Japanese school spring break and the end of the financial year, so domestic travel is high regardless of the blossoms.

Events and Dates in March 2027

• Hina Matsuri (3 March) — Girls' Day. Tiered displays of ornate dolls in homes, hotels and shops; some towns stage large public displays through the month.
• Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival (to 7 March) — the last week of the earliest blossoms. See our Kawazu guide.
• Omizutori at Todai-ji, Nara (1–14 March) — a 1,250-year-old fire ritual; monks swing enormous torches from the balcony of Nigatsudo hall each night, peaking on 12 March.
• Grand Sumo March Tournament, Osaka (mid-March) — the year's one Osaka basho, 15 days at the Edion Arena. Tickets go fast; the mechanics are the same as Tokyo, covered in our sumo guide.
• White Day (14 March) — the reply to Valentine's; mostly a department-store event.
• Vernal Equinox Day (Sun 21 March) and substitute holiday (Mon 22 March) — a three-day weekend for the whole country, and every Nozomi runs all-reserved from 20 to 22 March 2027. Reserve seats the moment bookings open, a month ahead.
• Cherry blossom openings (from around 20 March in Kyushu, around 24 March in Tokyo) — the event everyone actually comes for.

Where to Go in Japan in March

Tokyo

Early in the month: museums, food, and the plum groves at Hanegi Park and Yushima Tenjin. Late in the month: Ueno Park, the Meguro River, Chidorigafuchi and Shinjuku Gyoen as the blossoms open. Base yourself near a Yamanote Line station and you can reach all of them without a transfer.

Kyoto and Nara

Omizutori at Todai-ji is reason enough for Nara in the first half of March. Kyoto's Philosopher's Path and Maruyama Park come alive in the last week; before then the temples are quiet and the gardens are at their most austere.

Fukuoka and Kyushu

The insurance policy. If your dates are fixed to mid-March, Kyushu is where the first mainland blossoms will be. Fukuoka's Maizuru Park and the castle ruins are the classic spot, and the city's food scene rewards the detour on its own.

Hokkaido

Late-season skiing with fewer crowds and longer days. Niseko and Furano stay open well into the month; the snow is heavier than February's powder but the sunshine makes up for it.

A Practical Two-Week Itinerary for Late March 2027

This route is built around the forecast peak and hedges it with two cities that bloom a few days apart.

• Days 1–4 — Tokyo (arrive around 24–25 March). First bloom is typically just starting; by day 4 the parks are filling in. Ueno, Meguro River, Chidorigafuchi by rowboat.
• Day 5 — Hakone. An onsen night with Fuji views; blossoms here run a little later than Tokyo.
• Days 6–9 — Kyoto. Arrive as Kansai reaches full bloom. Philosopher's Path at 7am, Maruyama Park at night, a day trip to Nara.
• Days 10–11 — Osaka. Osaka Castle park and the Okawa river cruise; food.
• Days 12–14 — Kanazawa. Kenrokuen usually peaks in the first week of April, so you arrive right on time, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen takes you back to Tokyo in about 2.5 hours.

Avoid travelling on 20–22 March if you can — the equinox weekend is the month's one genuinely crowded transport window. If you must, reserved shinkansen seats booked a month ahead are non-negotiable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Arriving in early March for cherry blossoms. Outside Kawazu and Okinawa there are none until the last week.
• Betting a fixed one-week trip on full bloom in one city. The peak moves by up to two weeks year to year. Two cities a few days apart is the hedge.
• Booking late-March hotels late. They go months ahead and prices roughly double versus early March.
• Turning up at Tokyo Station on 20 March without a reservation. All-reserved Nozomi means no unreserved cars to fall back on.
• Packing for spring. The first half of March is still coat weather everywhere north of Kyushu.
