Why Visit Dogo Onsen
Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama is Japan's oldest hot spring, with a history stretching back over 3,000 years. The legendary Dogo Onsen Honkan — a striking three-storey wooden bathhouse built in 1894 — is said to have inspired the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, and remains an active public bath to this day.
The surrounding onsen district is a charming tangle of narrow shopping streets, ryokan, and small shrines. Visitors stroll in yukata robes and geta sandals between baths, tea houses, and the elegant Asuka-no-Yu annex. Dogo sits on the edge of Matsuyama city, home to the impressive Matsuyama Castle and the literary heritage of Natsume Soseki's novel Botchan, making it easy to combine hot-spring relaxation with cultural sightseeing.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms surround Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Park. The warm spring air makes yukata strolls through the onsen district especially pleasant.
Autumn (October – November) — Comfortable temperatures for castle visits and temple walks. The Dogo Onsen Art Festival often runs during this period with installations throughout the district.
Winter (December – February) — The classic onsen season. Soaking in the historic Honkan while cold air nips at your face is the quintessential Japanese hot-spring experience.
Insider Tips
- Arrive at the Honkan early morning when it opens at 6 AM to bathe before the crowds — the experience is meditative in the quiet dawn light.
- Try the Asuka-no-Yu annex for a more spacious, modern bathing experience while the Honkan undergoes conservation work.
- Watch for the Botchan Karakuri Clock beside the Honkan — it performs a mechanical show with characters from Soseki's novel every hour.
- Ride the charming Botchan steam locomotive replica from Dogo to Matsuyama city centre — the tiny train is a local icon.
