Why Visit Kotohira

Kotohira is home to Kotohira-gu (commonly known as Konpira-san), one of Japan's most revered Shinto shrines and a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The shrine is reached by climbing 785 stone steps to the main hall — or 1,368 steps to the inner shrine — a physical journey that has drawn visitors since the Edo period.

The small town at the base of the mountain retains the atmosphere of an old pilgrimage stop. Stone-paved lanes lined with souvenir shops and udon restaurants lead to the first torii gate, while the oldest kabuki theatre in Japan — the Kanamaruza, built in 1835 — still hosts annual performances each spring. Kotohira is the spiritual heart of Shikoku's Sanuki udon country, making every meal here a highlight.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April) — Cherry blossoms cascade down the mountain slopes along the pilgrimage route. The Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Theatre performs at the historic Kanamaruza in April.

Autumn (October – November) — Cool weather makes the long staircase climb comfortable. The shrine's annual festival in early October features lively processions.

Year-round — The shrine is open every day and the staircase climb is a rewarding experience in any season. Mornings are quietest.

Insider Tips

  • checkPush past the 785-step main hall to the inner shrine at 1,368 steps — the views over the Sanuki Plain are spectacular and the crowds thin out dramatically.
  • checkStart the climb early in the morning to avoid midday heat and enjoy the forested path in relative solitude.
  • checkEat Sanuki udon at one of the humble shops near the base — the hand-pulled noodles in Kagawa are considered the best in Japan.
  • checkLook for the shrine's “happiness yellow charm” (shiawase no kiiroi omamori) — it's one of the most popular amulets in Japan.
