Why Visit Beppu
Beppu is Japan's hot-spring capital, producing more thermal water than anywhere else in the country and ranking second in the entire world. Steam rises from rooftops, gutters, and hillsides across the city — a constant reminder that you're sitting on one of Earth's most active geothermal zones. With eight distinct onsen districts and over 2,000 spring sources, the sheer variety of bathing experiences here is unmatched.
Beyond soaking, Beppu's famous “Hells” (Jigoku) are a series of spectacular natural hot springs too hot for bathing — boiling mud pools, cobalt-blue ponds, and geysers erupting on schedule. The city's retro charm, friendly locals, and sand-bathing onsen at Beppu Beach add up to one of Kyushu's most distinctive stops.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – February) — Steam columns are most dramatic against cold air. Outdoor bathing is at its most rewarding, and fewer tourists visit Kyushu in winter.
Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms at Beppu Park and along the hillside onsen districts, plus pleasant temperatures for exploring the Hells on foot.
April (Beppu Onsen Festival) — A week-long celebration with free public baths, parades, and fireworks honouring the city's bathing culture.
Insider Tips
- Try sunayu (sand bathing) at Shoningahama — you're buried in naturally heated sand on the beach while waves crash nearby.
- Buy the combination ticket for the seven Hells (Jigoku) to save money — Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) and Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) are the most impressive.
- Eat jigoku-mushi (hell-steamed) cuisine — seafood and vegetables cooked in natural steam vents. The Jigoku Mushi Kobo workshop lets you steam your own.
- Explore Kannawa district on foot — the atmospheric narrow lanes with steam venting from every direction are the most photogenic spot in Beppu.
