Why Visit Shodoshima
Shodoshima is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its Mediterranean-like climate, sprawling olive groves, and the romantic sandbar called Angel Road that appears only at low tide. Often called Japan's “Olive Island,” Shodoshima has cultivated olives since 1908 and its hillside groves lend the landscape a distinctly Southern European feel.
The island also produces some of Japan's finest soy sauce and hand-stretched somen noodles, both crafted in small family workshops open to visitors. The Kankakei Gorge, one of Japan's top three gorges, offers spectacular ropeway rides through granite cliffs draped in maple and pine — especially breathtaking during autumn foliage season.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (November) — Kankakei Gorge is ablaze with red and gold foliage. The olive harvest is also underway, and fresh-pressed olive oil tastings are available.
Spring (April – May) — Mild weather, wildflowers, and a quieter atmosphere. Angel Road is particularly photogenic under clear spring skies.
Summer (July – August) — Beach season at Shodoshima's small coastal coves. The island's relaxed pace suits a slow summer escape.
Insider Tips
- Check the tide table before visiting Angel Road — the sandbar only appears for a few hours around low tide each day.
- Visit Marukin Soy Sauce Museum to learn about the island's 400-year soy sauce tradition and sample small-batch varieties.
- Rent a car or scooter — Shodoshima is larger than most expect and public transport is limited outside the main port areas.
- Try olive soft-serve ice cream and olive somen noodles at the Olive Park, which also has a Greek-style windmill overlooking the sea.
