Things to Do in Sapporo: Snow Festival, Miso Ramen, Mt. Moiwa and a Winter Plan That Works

Getting Your Bearings: Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino

Central Sapporo is a grid, and most visitors only need three points on it. Sapporo Station in the north is where the airport trains arrive, and the best hotel for a first visit is usually here or near Odori. Odori Park, a few blocks south, is the long green strip that holds the TV Tower, the winter lights and the Snow Festival. Susukino, just south of that, is the nightlife and ramen district.

All three are on the Namboku subway line, and underground walkways link Sapporo Station to Odori and Susukino, so on the coldest days you can walk the whole city center without going outside. Book a hotel near Sapporo Station or Odori and every attraction in this guide is conveniently located — you can head back to your hotel room to warm up between sights.

Odori Park and the Sapporo TV Tower

Odori Park

Odori Park runs east to west through the center for about 1.5 km and is the city's front yard: flower beds, fountains and a beer garden in summer, and in winter the main site of the festival and the White Illumination. Walk it end to end on your first afternoon to explore the center and take photos — it is the easiest way to get your bearings.

Is the Sapporo TV Tower Observation Deck Worth It?

The Sapporo TV Tower stands at the east end of Odori Park, located a short walk from the Clock Tower. Its observation deck costs ¥1,200 for adults (up from ¥1,000 in January 2026) and is open 9:00–22:00. It is worth it once, especially at dusk in February, when you look straight down the line of snow sculptures. For the bigger view after dark, save your money for Mt. Moiwa.

The Clock Tower, Hokkaido Jingu and Sapporo's History

Sapporo is young by Japanese standards — it was laid out as a planned city in the late 19th century — and its landmarks reflect that. The wooden Sapporo Clock Tower, a short walk from Odori, is the city's symbol; it costs ¥350 (8:45–17:10, closed 1–3 January) and takes 20 minutes. Many tourists find it smaller than they expected, so treat it as a quick photo stop on the way somewhere else.

Hokkaido Jingu, Hokkaido's main shrine, sits in the forest of Maruyama Park on the west side of the city, about 15 minutes' walk from Maruyama-koen subway station. It is free; the gates are open 7:00–16:00 from November to February. Visiting on a snowy morning, with the lanterns and torii half buried, is one of the most peaceful things to do in the city.

Winter in Sapporo: The Snow Festival, Lights and Winter Activities

Winter is the reason most people come. From late November to March the city turns into a winter wonderland, and the winter season has a steady calendar of events and winter activities that make visiting in the cold good fun.

Sapporo Snow Festival: 4–11 February 2027

The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival runs from 4 to 11 February 2027 at all three sites: Odori Park for the big snow sculptures, Susukino for the ice sculptures, and Tsudome for the snow slides and family activities. It is free, and the Odori site is at its best after dark, when the sculptures are lit; expect crowds and wait at the crossings. White Illumination and the Munich Christmas Market

Before the festival, Odori Park is lit by the Sapporo White Illumination from 20 November to 25 December 2026 (16:30–22:00, and to midnight on 23–25 December). The Munich Christmas Market fills Odori 1–2 chome over the same dates, 11:00–21:00, with mulled wine to drink and German food. The Ekimae-dori lights stay on to 11 February 2027. Shiroi Koibito Park and Moerenuma in the Snow

Shiroi Koibito Park, the factory park of the famous cookie, lights up from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027 (lights 16:00–19:00); the paid area is ¥1,200. Moerenuma Park, the landscape park designed by Isamu Noguchi on the edge of the city, is free, and in winter its hills become sled runs, which is fun with friends or children; the Glass Pyramid (9:00–18:00, closed the first Monday of each month) is a warm place to relax. Take bus 東69 from Kanjo-dori-higashi Station, about 15 minutes.

Where to Eat in Sapporo

Sapporo's local cuisine is built for the cold, and eating your way around the city is a favorite part of any trip. Four things to eat before you leave:

Miso Ramen and the Ramen Alley in the Susukino District

Miso ramen is said to have been born in Sapporo in 1955, and it is the city's dish: steaming bowls of rich miso broth with thick, curly noodles, often topped with corn and butter. Soy sauce and salt ramen are here too, but order miso first. The place to eat it is the Ganso Ramen Yokocho — the original ramen alley, founded in 1951 — in the Susukino district, with 17 small shops in one narrow lane. Each shop has its own hours, and many stay open until the early hours; at the famous ones expect to wait at the door, and look for the ticket machine or the sign with the menu outside.

Soup Curry

The city's tourism board calls soup curry an iconic soul food in Sapporo: a thin, spicy curry broth with a whole chicken leg and large pieces of roast vegetables, eaten with rice on the side. Every shop lets you choose the spice level — start in the middle. It is an interesting contrast to Japanese curry elsewhere and well worth checking out.

Nijo Market for a Seafood Breakfast

Nijo Market, a few minutes' walk from Odori, is open from about 7:00 to 17:00, and the best time to head there is breakfast: a bowl of rice topped with sea urchin, salmon roe and crab from one of the small restaurants. Almost every shop there also sells crab and dried seafood to take away.

Jingisukan: Hokkaido's Grilled Lamb

Jingisukan is lamb or mutton grilled at your table on a domed iron pan, with bean sprouts and vegetables cooking in the juices around the edge. It is a Hokkaido soul food, it goes perfectly with beer, and it is the classic dinner at the beer halls next to the Beer Museum.

The Sapporo Beer Museum and Sapporo Factory

Beer brewing in Japan has deep roots in Sapporo, and two sites tell the story. The Sapporo Beer Museum, in a red-brick building, is no longer free: since July 2026 entry is ¥1,000 for adults (11:00–18:00, closed 31 December), and many older guides still say otherwise. The tasting hall sells a glass of Black Label for ¥450 or a set of three for ¥1,200 — a good place for a drink before dinner. The 55-minute guided tour (¥2,000, reservation, not on Mondays) is in Japanese.

Sapporo Factory stands on the site of the city's first brewery, founded by the Hokkaido Development Commission in 1876. Today it is a shopping complex of about 150 shops and restaurants in seven buildings around a glass-roofed atrium, three minutes from Bus Center-mae subway station (exit 8). Shops open 10:00–20:00. In winter Sapporo Factory usually puts a giant Christmas tree in the atrium from early November, and it is a warm place to shop on a snowy afternoon.

Mt. Moiwa: The Best City View in Sapporo

The view after dark from the top of Mt. Moiwa is the one to see — one of the best in Japan. The ropeway and mini cable car cost ¥2,100 round trip, and in winter (December–March) they run 11:00–22:00, with the last ride up at 21:30.

Take the streetcar to Ropeway-iriguchi, then the free shuttle bus to the ropeway station at the foot of the mountain (every 15 minutes; on weekdays it starts only at 17:17, so daytime visitors walk about 10 minutes). Go up just before sunset, wait for the city lights to come on, and bring warm layers: it gets cool fast at the top.

Day Trips From Sapporo and Skiing in the Surrounding Area

Otaru

Otaru, the old port town with its canal and stone warehouses, is about 32 minutes from Sapporo by JR rapid train and ¥800 one way. Spend a day exploring the canal, the glass and music-box shops and the sushi street; it is the classic day trip from Sapporo for Japanese and foreign visitors alike. Jozankei Onsen

Jozankei Onsen is Sapporo's hot spring town, in a river gorge about an hour from the center by the Kappa Liner bus from Sapporo Station (¥1,700 one way, reservation required, from a month ahead to 17:00 the day before). Go for a day-use public bath with a snow view, or better, book a ryokan room and stay over.

Skiing Near Sapporo

Sapporo has ski slopes within an hour of the city center. Sapporo Teine is about 40 minutes by car; its bus pack from central hotels (with a 7-hour lift ticket, ¥11,000) runs 5 December 2026 to 28 March 2027. Getting to Sapporo and Getting Around

Most visitors fly into New Chitose Airport, which has flights from other major cities in Japan and around the world. JR trains reach Sapporo Station in as little as 33 minutes for ¥1,230, about six an hour in the daytime. Inside the city, the subway is the way to move in winter:

How Cold Is Sapporo in Winter?

Cold, but dry, and the city is built for it. These are the Japan Meteorological Agency's averages for 1991–2020:

Bring boots with a real grip — the sidewalks are packed ice — plus a warm hat and gloves. You will be moving between warm rooms and cold streets all day, so layers work better than one heavy coat.

Sapporo's Accommodation Tax

Since 1 April 2026, Hokkaido and the City of Sapporo both charge an accommodation tax, paid at the hotel, per person per night:

A 3-Day Sapporo Winter Itinerary

• Day 1 — the center. Walk Odori Park from the TV Tower to the west end, see the Clock Tower, then an early dinner of miso ramen in Susukino and back to Odori for the lights.
• Day 2 — Otaru. Nijo Market for breakfast, the train to Otaru for the canal and the shops, back by late afternoon, and Mt. Moiwa for the view after dark.
• Day 3 — shrine, beer and a bath. Hokkaido Jingu in the morning snow, the Beer Museum and a jingisukan lunch, then the bus to Jozankei for a public bath — or stay there.

These routes of ours stay in Sapporo. The ski routes include chartered-taxi transfers from New Chitose Airport and between the hotels, so you don't carry skis on trains; lift tickets are not included. Prices are per person and move with season and room type.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Booking the festival week late. Hotels for 4–11 February fill months ahead.
• Wearing city shoes. The sidewalks are ice from December to March; wear boots with grip.
• Trusting old price lists. The Beer Museum is no longer free, and the tower and Clock Tower cost more than older guides say.
• Turning up for the Kappa Liner without a booking. Reserve the bus to Jozankei the day before at the latest.
• Going up Mt. Moiwa on a weekday afternoon expecting the shuttle bus. It starts at 17:17 on weekdays; walk from the streetcar stop.
