Why Visit Furano
Furano sits at the heart of Hokkaido's rolling interior, famous worldwide for its endless lavender fields that paint the hillsides purple every summer. Beyond the iconic blooms, the town is surrounded by fertile farmland producing some of Japan's finest melons, asparagus, and wine grapes.
In winter, Furano transforms into a powder-snow paradise. The ski resort receives consistent dry snowfall, and the uncrowded slopes attract those who prefer a quieter alternative to Niseko. Year-round, the dramatic Tokachi-dake mountain backdrop and patchwork-quilt farmscapes make Furano one of Hokkaido's most photogenic destinations.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (July – August) — Peak lavender season at Farm Tomita and Choei Lavender Farm. Wildflower fields of poppies, lupins, and sunflowers create rainbow-striped hillsides.
Winter (December – March) — Furano Ski Resort offers excellent powder snow with far fewer crowds than Niseko. Night skiing is available on select runs.
Autumn (September – October) — Harvest season brings fresh melon, grapes, and cheese tasting. The foliage around Tokachi-dake is stunning in early October.
Insider Tips
- Farm Tomita is free to enter and opens early — arrive before 8 AM for photos without crowds.
- Try lavender soft-serve ice cream and melon from the roadside stands — Furano melons rival Yubari in sweetness.
- Furano Wine Factory offers free tastings and panoramic vineyard views overlooking the Tokachi peaks.
- Combine Furano with nearby Biei for the famous patchwork road and Blue Pond, easily done as a day trip.
