Why Visit Rusutsu
Rusutsu is a premier mountain resort in Hokkaido, located roughly midway between Niseko and Lake Toya. With 37 runs spread across three mountains — Mount Isola, East Mountain, and West Mountain — Rusutsu offers some of Hokkaido's finest powder skiing in a setting that feels less crowded and more exclusively Japanese than its internationally famous neighbour.
In summer, the resort transforms into an outdoor playground. An amusement park with roller coasters and rides opens on the grounds, while the surrounding plateau offers horseback riding, mountain biking, golf, and hot-air balloon flights with views of Mount Yotei. Rusutsu's location in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park means pristine nature is never more than a few steps away, whatever the season.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – March) — Deep, consistent powder snow across all three mountains. Night skiing is available and lift queues are shorter than at Niseko.
Summer (July – August) — The amusement park and outdoor activities are in full swing. Hokkaido's cool summer temperatures make it a refreshing escape from mainland heat.
Autumn (September – October) — Stunning fall foliage around Lake Toya and the national park. Ideal for scenic drives and nature walks.
Insider Tips
- Mount Isola's tree runs offer some of the best ungroomed powder in Hokkaido with far fewer skiers than Niseko's backcountry.
- The resort's indoor wave pool and carousel keep families entertained on stormy days when the mountain is wind-affected.
- Combine Rusutsu with a day trip to Lake Toya — the caldera lake and its volcanic island are just 30 minutes by car.
- Book the resort's dog-sledding experience in winter for a unique Hokkaido memory — it fills up fast during peak season.
