Why Visit Gifu
Gifu city sits along the Nagara River in central Japan, a place where samurai history and living traditions merge. Gifu Castle perches dramatically atop Mount Kinka, once the stronghold of Oda Nobunaga during his campaign to unify Japan. The city below preserves one of the country's most remarkable customs: ukai cormorant fishing.
Each summer evening from May to October, master fishermen in traditional garb guide trained cormorants by torchlight to catch sweetfish — a spectacle unchanged for over 1,300 years. Beyond the river, Gifu is the gateway to the mountainous Hida region, Shirakawa-go's thatched-roof villages, and some of Japan's finest onsen towns.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (May – October) — Ukai cormorant fishing season on the Nagara River. Evening boat rides with bonfires and fresh ayu fish are an essential Gifu experience.
Autumn (November) — Maple foliage around Gifu Park and Mount Kinka is spectacular. The ropeway to Gifu Castle offers aerial views of crimson canopy.
Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms blanket the Nagara River banks and Gifu Park. The city holds a lively spring festival with float processions.
Insider Tips
- Book ukai viewing boat tickets in advance — they include a bento dinner and sake while watching from the river.
- Take the Kinka-zan ropeway at sunset for panoramic views of the Nagara River valley and distant Japanese Alps.
- Explore the Kawara-machi historic district for Edo-period lattice townhouses, artisan shops, and local cafés.
- Gifu is a craft hub — look for Gifu lanterns (chochin) and Gifu fans (uchiwa), both designated traditional crafts.
