Why Visit Hita

Hita is a small riverside city in western Oita Prefecture, sometimes called the “Little Kyoto of Kyushu” for its well-preserved Edo-period merchant quarter. The Mameda district, with its whitewashed storehouses and wooden-lattice shopfronts, feels like stepping into a Japanese woodblock print.

In summer, Hita comes alive with the tradition of ukai — cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River performed by torchlight from flat-bottomed boats. The surrounding cedar-clad mountains keep the town cool and misty, and the local Sapporo beer brewery takes advantage of Hita's famously pure spring water. It's the kind of unhurried, off-radar destination where travellers can connect with everyday Japan.

Best Time to Visit

Summer (May – October) — Cormorant fishing season runs from May 20 to October 31. The Hita Gion Festival in late July features spectacular floats parading through the Mameda streets.

Spring (March – April) — The Mameda Ohinamatsuri festival displays thousands of traditional dolls in the merchant houses — a charming cultural event unique to Hita.

Autumn (November) — Autumn foliage along the Mikuma River and in the surrounding mountain temples. Fewer visitors than coastal Kyushu destinations.

Insider Tips

  • checkWalk the Mameda district early in the morning before shops open to photograph the empty Edo-era streetscapes in soft light.
  • checkBook a yakatabune (houseboat) dinner to watch cormorant fishing up close while enjoying local cuisine on the Mikuma River.
  • checkSample Hita yakisoba — the local style uses crispy pan-fried noodles with a rich sauce, distinct from other regional variations.
  • checkCombine Hita with nearby Yufuin — both are connected by the scenic JR Kyudai Main Line through mountain valleys.
