Why Visit Fukuoka
Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest city and Japan's most liveable metropolis by many rankings. Compact enough to explore on foot yet brimming with culture, it's best known for one thing above all: tonkotsu ramen. The rich, pork-bone broth was perfected here, and you can slurp it at legendary yatai (open-air food stalls) lining the Naka River each evening.
Beyond the food scene, Fukuoka blends ancient and modern effortlessly. The 1,200-year-old Kushida Shrine sits minutes from the sleek Canal City shopping complex. The waterfront Momochi district hosts beaches and a striking tower, while the old merchant quarter of Hakata retains its traditional festival spirit. It's also a prime gateway to the rest of Kyushu.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (late March – April) — Cherry blossoms at Maizuru Park and Nishi Park, plus mild coastal weather perfect for walking.
July (Hakata Gion Yamakasa) — One of Japan's most spectacular festivals, with massive illuminated floats racing through the streets at dawn on July 15th.
Autumn (October – November) — Warm days, cool evenings, and smaller crowds. Ideal for exploring Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine and its surrounding plum groves.
Insider Tips
- Yatai stalls along the Naka River open around 6 PM — arrive early to grab a seat, as each stall holds only 8–10 people.
- Order “kaedama” (noodle refill) at ramen shops for around ¥100–150 — it's the local way to finish a bowl.
- Visit Tocho-ji Temple to see Japan's largest seated wooden Buddha — it's free, central, and almost never crowded.
- The Tenjin Underground Shopping Street connects directly to the subway — perfect for rainy-day browsing.
