Why Visit Fukuoka

Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest city and Japan's most liveable metropolis by many rankings. Compact enough to explore on foot yet brimming with culture, it's best known for one thing above all: tonkotsu ramen. The rich, pork-bone broth was perfected here, and you can slurp it at legendary yatai (open-air food stalls) lining the Naka River each evening.

Beyond the food scene, Fukuoka blends ancient and modern effortlessly. The 1,200-year-old Kushida Shrine sits minutes from the sleek Canal City shopping complex. The waterfront Momochi district hosts beaches and a striking tower, while the old merchant quarter of Hakata retains its traditional festival spirit. It's also a prime gateway to the rest of Kyushu.

  • checkOrder “kaedama” (noodle refill) at ramen shops for around ¥100–150 — it's the local way to finish a bowl.
  • checkVisit Tocho-ji Temple to see Japan's largest seated wooden Buddha — it's free, central, and almost never crowded.
  • checkThe Tenjin Underground Shopping Street connects directly to the subway — perfect for rainy-day browsing.
