Why Visit Shimabara
Shimabara is a compact castle town on the eastern coast of Nagasaki Prefecture's Shimabara Peninsula. Dominated by the volcanic presence of Mount Unzen, the town is defined by crystal-clear spring water that flows through its streets — earning it the nickname “City of Spring Water.” Koi carp swim freely in the channels that line the old samurai district.
The restored Shimabara Castle, built in 1624, stands as the town's centrepiece, while the nearby Unzen volcanic area offers bubbling jigoku hot springs, hiking trails through primeval forests, and dramatic views of the Ariake Sea. Shimabara is also the gateway to the Kumamoto ferry, making it a natural connector between Kyushu 's western and central regions.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April – May) — Azalea blossoms carpet Mount Unzen's slopes in vivid pink. The town's spring-water channels sparkle under mild skies.
Autumn (October – November) — Unzen's Nita Pass explodes with fall colour, making it one of Kyushu's premier foliage spots.
Winter (December – February) — Frost-rimmed trees called “juhyo” appear on Unzen's peaks. The hot springs feel especially restorative in cold weather.
Insider Tips
- Walk the Shimabara Samurai District (Buke Yashiki) and drink straight from the natural spring-water fountains along the way.
- Try kanazarashi, a local dessert of small rice-flour dumplings served in chilled spring water with a sweet syrup.
- Visit the Unzen Jigoku (hell) hot springs to see steaming vents and bubbling pools up close before soaking in the nearby public baths.
- Take the 30-minute ferry from Shimabara Port to Kumamoto to combine both destinations in a single itinerary.
