Why Visit Kumamoto
Kumamoto is a proud castle city in the heart of Kyushu. Its crown jewel, Kumamoto Castle, ranks among Japan's three premier castles and is undergoing a painstaking restoration following the devastating 2016 earthquakes — a process that is itself a compelling story of resilience and craftsmanship.
The city is also the gateway to Mount Aso, one of the world's largest volcanic calderas, where an active crater steams against a backdrop of sweeping grasslands. Kumamoto's food scene punches well above its weight, from basashi (horse sashimi) to thick, garlic-rich Kumamoto ramen. The local mascot Kumamon has become a global icon, but the city's substance runs far deeper than its cuddly ambassador.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (March – April) — Over 800 cherry trees surround the castle grounds, making it one of Kyushu's top hanami spots. Mild weather is ideal for exploring on foot.
Autumn (October – November) — Clear skies make Mount Aso's crater most accessible. The Kusasenri grasslands turn golden, and Kurokawa Onsen is at its scenic peak.
Winter (December – February) — Fewer crowds at the castle and mild Kyushu winters. Onsen season is at its most inviting, and basashi is at prime quality.
Insider Tips
- Walk the castle's special viewing route to see the earthquake damage and restoration up close — full restoration is expected by 2037.
- At Kurokawa Onsen, buy the rotemburo tegata (wooden pass, ¥1,300) to try three different outdoor baths at different ryokan.
- Check Aso's volcanic alert level before visiting the crater — access is restricted when activity increases.
