Why Visit Himeji
Himeji Castle is widely considered the finest surviving example of Japanese castle architecture. Its brilliant white plastered walls and soaring five-storey main keep earned it the nickname “White Heron Castle” and UNESCO World Heritage status in 1993. Unlike most Japanese castles, Himeji's main structure is entirely original — never destroyed by war, earthquake, or fire in over 400 years.
A major six-year restoration completed in 2015 returned the castle to its dazzling white brilliance. Beyond the castle grounds, the adjacent Kokoen Garden offers nine distinct Edo-style walled gardens, and the hillside Engyo-ji Temple (reached by ropeway) was a filming location for “The Last Samurai.” While many visitors stop briefly on the Shinkansen route, Himeji rewards a half-day or more of exploration.
Best Time to Visit
Cherry Blossom Season (late March – early April) — Over 1,000 cherry trees surround the castle, creating one of Japan's top five hanami spots. The white castle framed by pink blossoms is unforgettable.
Autumn (mid November – early December) — Kokoen Garden's maple foliage is stunning, and the grounds are far less crowded than during cherry blossom season.
Year-round — Himeji Castle is impressive in any season. Clear winter days offer crisp views, and the castle is lit up at night throughout the year.
Insider Tips
- Arrive when the castle opens at 9 AM — the keep interior has steep, narrow stairs and gets very congested by mid-morning.
- Buy a joint ticket for the castle and Kokoen Garden to save ¥40 and enjoy a matcha set in the garden's tea room afterward.
- The view from the top floor of the keep includes a small shrine — look for it at the very summit. On clear days you can see the Seto Inland Sea.
- Don't miss Engyo-ji Temple on Mount Shosha — the ropeway ride and mountain temple complex are worth the 30-minute detour from the castle.
