Why Visit Takehara
Takehara is a beautifully preserved Edo-era merchant town on the coast of Hiroshima Prefecture, often called “Little Kyoto of Aki” for its atmospheric streets of lattice-fronted townhouses, whitewashed storehouses, and bamboo-lattice walls. Unlike more famous historical towns, Takehara sees relatively few international visitors — lending it a sense of genuine discovery.
The town's historic preservation district stretches along a gentle hillside, with temples, sake breweries, and traditional sweet shops lining narrow stone paths. Takehara is also the main port for ferries to Okunoshima, the famous “Rabbit Island” where hundreds of friendly wild rabbits roam freely among ruins of a former research facility.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms frame the historic district's traditional rooftops. The rabbits on Okunoshima are also very active in spring.
Autumn (October – November) — Gentle temperatures and autumn colours complement Takehara's warm-toned wooden architecture perfectly.
February (Bamboo Lantern Festival) — The historic streets are illuminated by hundreds of handmade bamboo lanterns during the Takehara Machimani Chikuakari festival.
Insider Tips
- Climb to Saihoji Temple at the top of the preservation district for a panoramic view over the traditional rooftops and the Seto Inland Sea.
- Buy rabbit food at Tadanoumi Port before boarding the Okunoshima ferry — the island's vending machines sometimes sell out.
- Visit one of Takehara's working sake breweries for a tasting. The town's pure mountain water produces clean, refined brews.
- Fans of the anime “Tamayura” will recognise many real locations in Takehara — the town fully embraces the connection.
