Sagano Romantic Train: Tickets, Times and the New Train From 2027

How Kyoto's Sagano Scenic Railway works: fares, the hourly timetable, booking one month (from 2027, 30 days) ahead, the open Rich car's last season, the new train and seat fee from March 2027, and the Hozugawa river boat back to Arashiyama.

schedule12 min read••Updated for 2026

The Sagano Romantic Train is a slow sightseeing train that follows the Hozu River gorge for about 7.3 km, from Saga in western Kyoto to Kameoka. The journey takes about 25 minutes one way. At the time of writing an adult ticket costs ¥880, and the train runs from March 1 to December 29.

Should you ride the Sagano Romantic Train? With three or more days in Kyoto, honestly, yes. Book ahead for spring and autumn, ride upstream to Kameoka, then float back on the Hozugawa River boat ride. On its own it's a short train ride. Built into a half day, it's one of the easiest scenic wins in western Kyoto.

One big change is coming. The current cars, including the open-air Rich car, make their last runs on 29 December 2026, and a new train takes over from 1 March 2027 with a seat fee on top of the fare. This guide covers both.

The line is run by the Sagano Scenic Railway (Sagano Torokko Ressha in Japanese). It uses a section of old JR Sanin Line track that was left behind when the main line was double-tracked and electrified on a new route. That's why it runs so close to the river.

🚂 Quick Answer: The Sagano Romantic Train

A 25-minute, 7.3 km ride along the Hozu River gorge between Torokko Saga (next to JR Saga-Arashiyama) and Torokko Kameoka, hourly from about 9:00 to 16:30, March 1 to December 29. Until 29 December 2026 an adult pays ¥880 with the seat included; from 1 March 2027 the new train costs ¥880 plus a ¥620 seat fee. Book on the official site from midnight Japan time one month ahead (30 days ahead from 2027); the Japan Rail Pass doesn't cover it. Our 9-day Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto route (GR508) and four other routes you can book online have a Kyoto sightseeing day you can give to Arashiyama.

The New Sagano Train From March 2027

After more than 30 years, the Sagano Scenic Railway is replacing its train. The current locomotive and five cars retire after the last run on 29 December 2026, the line closes for winter as usual, and the new train starts on 1 March 2027 with the 10:02 from Torokko Saga. Its last autumn is lit up: from 24 October to 29 December 2026 (except 16 December), the line is illuminated from the 16:30 departure from Kameoka until the last train.

The fare itself isn't going up: the transport ministry re-approved ¥880 in October 2026 for April 2027 onward. What changes is the reserved seat, which now costs extra, and the open-air Rich car, which has no direct successor. The new train's answer is a covered, half-open deck at the doors of every car, which you can use on the fare alone, and the six-person Premium Cabin “Rankyo” with a tatami-style bench and a view ahead, booked from Saga or Kameoka. The operator hasn't published seat numbers for the new cars yet.

What the Sagano Romantic Train Is Like on Board

What the Sagano Romantic Train offers is simple: slow, close-up views of the gorge. Until the end of 2026, a DE10 diesel locomotive pulls five carriages at a leisurely pace — the operator compares it to a fast bicycle. Cars 1 to 4 are the four enclosed cars, and their windows open. Car 5 is the open-air Rich car.

Don't expect modern amenities. There's no toilet on board, so use the station before you go.

There's no old steam engine at the front of the train either. It's a diesel locomotive. If you're into historical locomotives, the 19th Century Hall at Torokko Saga Station has steam locomotives on display, and the Kyoto Railway Museum is worth its own half day.

The romantic atmosphere comes from the natural beauty outside: rapids, steep wooded slopes, cherry blossoms in spring and red maples in autumn.

The Sagano Romantic Train Route, Station by Station

The Sagano Romantic Train route has four stations. Here's what each one is good for.

Torokko Saga Station: A Convenient Location Next to JR

Torokko Saga Station is the line's eastern terminus, right next to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, about five minutes on foot. In Google Maps, “Saga Torokko Station” and “Torokko Station Saga” both take you to the same place. Most Sagano Romantic Train riders start here because it's so close to the JR line.

Come 30 minutes early. The Saga Torokko Station building holds the 19th Century Hall, a small train museum with steam locomotives, a grand piano and a large organ, plus the SL Roman Café. It's also home to Diorama Kyoto JAPAN, a large scale railway diorama with HO-gauge trains (¥530 for adults, 9:00–17:00). The operator calls it one of Japan's largest. The station also has a counter for the Hozugawa river boat, where you can book the boat and the bus to its pier on the day.

Torokko Arashiyama Station and the Bamboo Forest

Torokko Arashiyama Station (some maps call it Arashiyama Torokko Station) is the closest stop to the bamboo forest path and Okochi Sanso: turn left out of the station. Heads-up if you plan to board the train here: there are about 60 steps up to the platform and no lift. It's about 20 minutes on foot from JR Saga-Arashiyama.

Torokko Hozukyo Station: Deep in the Hozu River Gorge

Torokko Hozukyo Station is a tiny unstaffed platform in the middle of the Hozugawa River gorge, reached by stairs and a suspension bridge. There's no ticket window and no rest area. Most riders stay on the train.

Torokko Kameoka Station and the Hozugawa River Connection

Torokko Kameoka Station is the upstream end of the line. The nearest JR train station is Umahori on the JR Sanin Line, about a 10-minute walk away. A Keihan Kyoto Kotsu bus runs from Torokko Kameoka Station to the river boat pier at 35 minutes past each hour.

Getting There from Kyoto Station

From Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line (part of the Sanin Main Line) to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. The JR train ride takes about 11 to 17 minutes, and an IC card covers it; the Japan Rail Pass covers this JR leg but not the Sagano train.

Come out of the JR station and Saga Torokko Station is right next door. It's a small train station, so you won't get lost. If you're still deciding where to base yourself, our where to stay in Kyoto guide compares the areas.

Sagano Romantic Train Tickets, Fares and Booking Rules

A one-way ticket on the Sagano Scenic Railway costs ¥880 for adults (12 and over) and ¥440 for children (6–11), whichever stations you ride between. Children aged 1 to 5 ride free, one per paying passenger, unless they take a seat of their own. Every seat is assigned. Tickets are one way only, so if you want to come back by train you need a second ticket. From 1 March 2027, add the seat fee: ¥620 for adults, ¥310 for children.

Booking Online vs Same Day Tickets

The official Sagano Scenic Railway website starts selling seats at midnight Japan time, one month before your travel date; for the new train from March 2027, it's 30 days before. You need an account and a credit card, up to eight tickets fit in one booking, and the QR code only appears on the day. You can cancel for free until 23:59 the day before, but not on the day itself.

Same day tickets are sold at Saga Torokko Station, Torokko Arashiyama and Torokko Kameoka on a first come, first served basis, even when the website shows the train as full. Station counters don't sell advance tickets. Outside the peak seasons, same-day tickets usually work. On a mid-November weekend, it's a gamble I wouldn't take.

Standing Tickets When Seats Sell Out

When the seats are gone, the stations (not Hozukyo) sell a limited number of standing tickets on the day, also first come, first served. They go fast. Treat them as plan C.

The Rich Car: Its Last Season

Car No. 5, nicknamed “The Rich”, is the open air car. It has no glass, a glass roof and a see-through floor, and you get a cool breeze off the river for the same fare. The operator's booking page lets you choose car 5 online. Older guides say you could only buy it on the day; that's no longer true. You'll get wet if it rains, umbrellas aren't allowed on board, and there are no refunds or changes for rain. It retires with the rest of the train on 29 December 2026.

From our Japan travel team

Sagano Romantic Train seats go on sale online at midnight Japan time, one month ahead (30 days ahead from 2027), and autumn and cherry blossom weekends are usually the first to sell out. Kyoto hotels and trains also fill up fast around those dates, so it's worth starting your planning early. Our self-guided tours handle the hotel and train bookings and support you through the trip, so feel free to get in touch.

Departure Times, Operating Days and the Winter Break

The Sagano Romantic Train runs once an hour in each direction, eight trains each way, with extra evening trains on busy days.

DirectionDepartures
Torokko Saga → Torokko KameokaHourly at :02, 9:02 to 16:02 (Arashiyama +3 min, Kameoka arrival :25)
Torokko Kameoka → Torokko SagaHourly at :30, 9:30 to 16:30 (Saga arrival :56; the 16:30 arrives 17:04)
Extra evening trains (set days)Saga 17:10 and 18:26; Kameoka 17:43 and 18:59
  • Season: March 1 to December 29
  • Winter break: December 30 to the end of February (30 December 2026 to 28 February 2027 this winter)
  • Closed days: mostly Wednesdays, but not every Wednesday — peak-season Wednesdays run (all of November 2026 runs; 16 December is the last closed day of 2026). Check the operator's calendar for your date
  • Extra trains in autumn 2026: the 17:10 from Saga runs from 24 October to 13 December and on 26–27 December, and the 18:26 from 14 to 30 November and on 5–6 December
  • Weather: service can be suspended in bad weather

Where to Sit for the Best River Views

The Sagano Romantic Train route twists through the gorge, so you'll see the river from both sides. Seat guides online don't agree on a “best side”, and the operator doesn't name one. What it does say: window seats are A and D, and on trains to Kameoka seats C and D face forward (A and B on the way back to Saga). Getting a window seat matters more than which side you're on. Or, until the end of 2026, just get a seat in the Rich car.

Pairing the Train with a Hozugawa River Boat Ride

Take the Sagano Romantic Train upstream to Kameoka, then the bus (about 10 minutes, ¥500) to the pier. From there the Hozugawa River boat ride takes you about 16 km back down the gorge to Arashiyama, finishing near Togetsukyo Bridge, 15 to 20 minutes on foot from JR Saga-Arashiyama. The boat ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the water level.

Order matters. Boats only go downstream, so it's train first, boat second.

The boat costs ¥6,000 for adults and ¥4,500 for children, and children must be at least 80 cm tall. On weekdays boats leave every hour between 9:00 and 15:00; on weekends and holidays they leave whenever a boat is full. From mid-December to early March there are four winter sailings a day. Groups of up to nine can book online until the day before; in October and November the online slots often fill, and on the day you queue at the pier. Heavy rain or unusual water levels can cancel trips, so have a backup plan.

Best Seasons: Cherry Blossoms, Autumn Leaves and Everything Between

WhenWhat you'll seeBooking pressure
Late March to early AprilSakura season, with cherry blossoms along the lineVery high
May to AugustGreen gorge; the open windows (and from 2027 the open decks) are a lifesaverModerate
Mid November to early DecemberPeak autumn leavesHighest of the year
Early March, late DecemberBare branches, thinner crowdsLower

For pure scenic beauty, autumn wins, and that's why the Sagano Scenic Railway is busiest then; see our Kyoto autumn leaves and Arashiyama autumn leaves guides for the timing. For spring, the 2027 cherry blossom forecast tracks Kyoto's dates. Summer gets overlooked, but the scenery is still beautiful and seats are usually easier to get.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Turning up on a closed day without checking the calendar, or between 30 December and the end of February.
  • Doing the boat first. It only runs downstream from Kameoka.
  • Taking an afternoon train upstream. The last boats leave mid-afternoon (earlier in winter), so you may miss them.
  • Expecting a long train ride. The Sagano Romantic Train takes 25 minutes, so plan a morning around it, not a whole day.
  • Assuming the Japan Rail Pass covers it. It covers the JR ride to Saga-Arashiyama, not the Sagano train.
  • Budgeting 2026 prices for a 2027 trip. From March 2027 a reserved seat costs ¥1,500 for an adult, not ¥880.

How to Fit It into a Real Kyoto Itinerary

A half-day loop that works:

  1. Early morning: JR train from Kyoto Station to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.
  2. Before your train: the diorama at Saga Torokko Station, or the bamboo forest before the crowds arrive.
  3. Mid-morning: Sagano Romantic Train from Saga Torokko Station to Kameoka Torokko Station.
  4. Late morning: bus to the pier, then the boat back to Arashiyama.
  5. Afternoon: lunch, then Tenryu-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and other nearby attractions.

You can walk to all of Arashiyama's famous sites from the boat landing, so the afternoon can go at a leisurely pace. In a Kyoto itinerary, give this loop a day with nothing else booked. If you still have energy, add a tea ceremony back in central Kyoto, and see our things to do in Kyoto and day trips from Kyoto for the rest of your days.

Like scenic trains? Kyoto is also the start of Kintetsu's purple Aoniyoshi to Nara, covered in our Kintetsu Rail Pass guide, and our restaurant train guide rounds up the trains where lunch is part of the ride.

From our Japan travel team

The Sagano Scenic Railway runs from March 1 to December 29 and is closed on only some Wednesdays, so it fits most spring, summer and autumn trips to Kyoto. Many of our self-guided tours include free time in Kyoto, so if your dates line up you can fit the train-and-boat loop into one of those days without rebuilding the itinerary. Just ask and we'll help you slot it into your route.

Our Routes With a Kyoto Day for Arashiyama
