Why Visit Yamanashi
Yamanashi Prefecture is the home of Mount Fuji's most celebrated views. The Fuji Five Lakes region along the volcano's northern base offers iconic vantage points — from the pagoda-framed panorama at Chureito to the mirror-still reflections on Lake Kawaguchiko. No photograph captures Japan quite like Fuji rising above Yamanashi's landscapes.
Beyond Fuji, Yamanashi is Japan's premier wine country. The Koshu Valley around Katsunuma produces award-winning wines from the indigenous Koshu grape, and vineyard tours with tastings are increasingly popular. The Shosenkyo Gorge near Kofu offers dramatic rock formations and autumn foliage, while the prefecture's famous hoto noodles — thick, flat noodles simmered in miso broth with pumpkin — are the ultimate mountain comfort food.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April – May) — Cherry blossoms and shibazakura (pink moss) carpet the Fuji foothills. The Chureito Pagoda with Fuji and sakura is one of Japan's most iconic spring images.
Autumn (October – November) — Brilliant foliage around the Five Lakes and Shosenkyo Gorge. Clear autumn air makes Fuji most visible and the grape harvest season brings wine festivals.
Winter (December – February) — Snow-capped Fuji is at its most dramatic. Fewer tourists and crisp, clear skies make for stunning photography.
Insider Tips
- Mount Fuji is clearest in the morning — aim to reach viewpoints like Chureito Pagoda or Lake Kawaguchiko's north shore before 10 AM.
- Visit Katsunuma for wine tastings — over 30 wineries dot the valley, many within walking distance of Katsunuma-Budokyo Station.
- Eat hoto noodles at Hoto Fudo near Kawaguchiko — the hearty miso-pumpkin broth is the definitive Yamanashi dish.
- The Fuji Panoramic Ropeway at Kawaguchiko takes you to a viewpoint with Fuji and the lake below — sunsets from here are extraordinary.
