Why Visit Asahikawa
Asahikawa is Hokkaido's second-largest city and the gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan's biggest national park. Sitting at the confluence of several rivers in a vast inland basin, it experiences some of Japan's coldest winters — and harnesses that climate to create unforgettable experiences.
The city is home to the acclaimed Asahiyama Zoo, where innovative exhibit design lets visitors watch penguins walk, polar bears dive, and seals swim through overhead tubes. Asahikawa is also the birthplace of Asahikawa ramen — a rich, soy-based style with a signature layer of lard that keeps the broth piping hot in the frigid winters.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (January – February) — The Asahikawa Winter Festival features massive snow sculptures and ice art. Asahiyama Zoo's famous penguin parade runs daily during the snowy months.
Summer (July – August) — Ideal for hiking in Daisetsuzan. Alpine wildflowers carpet the high plateaus, and Sounkyo Gorge's waterfalls are at their most powerful.
Autumn (September – October) — Daisetsuzan boasts Japan's earliest autumn foliage, starting at the summit in mid-September and rolling downhill through October.
Insider Tips
- Arrive at Asahiyama Zoo right at opening (9:30 AM) to see the penguin walk — it runs only in winter and draws long lines.
- Asahikawa Ramen Village gathers eight top shops under one roof — perfect for comparing the city's signature style.
- Otokoyama Sake Brewery offers free tastings of award-winning sake brewed with Daisetsuzan snowmelt water.
- Use Asahikawa as a base for Sounkyo Gorge — the Kurodake ropeway gives easy access to stunning alpine terrain.
