Why Visit Morioka
Morioka, the capital of Iwate Prefecture, is a castle town where three rivers converge beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Iwate. Named one of the “world's best places to visit” by the New York Times in 2023, this underrated city charms visitors with its walkable downtown, traditional craft culture, and exceptional noodle scene.
Morioka is the undisputed noodle capital of northern Japan. Wanko soba (all-you-can-eat buckwheat noodles served bowl by tiny bowl), jajamen (chewy flat noodles with miso meat sauce), and reimen (cold noodles in chilled beef broth) form the city's famous “three great noodles.” Beyond food, the city offers ironware workshops, a serene castle ruin park, and a genuine Tohoku warmth that lingers long after you leave.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April – May) — The famous stone-splitting cherry tree at Morioka Castle blooms through a granite boulder. Shidare-zakura weeping cherries line the riverbanks.
Autumn (October – November) — Mount Iwate's slopes blaze with color. The Morioka Autumn Festival features ornate float processions through the city center.
Summer (August) — The Sansa Odori festival fills the streets with thousands of taiko drummers and dancers — one of Tohoku's most energetic summer celebrations.
Insider Tips
- Challenge yourself to wanko soba — servers keep refilling tiny bowls until you cap yours. Most people eat 50–100 bowls.
- Visit a Nanbu tekki (ironware) workshop to see the centuries-old craft of hand-casting tetsubin kettles.
- Stroll the Zaimokucho district for Taisho-era brick buildings now housing coffee shops, bookstores, and galleries.
- Morioka is a Shinkansen stop — only 2 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo, making it easy to combine with a Tohoku itinerary.
