Why Visit Ryujin Onsen
Ryujin Onsen is a secluded hot-spring village deep in the Hidaka River valley of Wakayama Prefecture. One of Japan's three great “beautifying waters,” its sodium bicarbonate springs have earned the nickname “bijin-no-yu” — the hot spring of beautiful skin — for their remarkable softening effect.
Surrounded by steep cedar-covered mountains and accessible only by winding mountain roads, Ryujin feels genuinely remote. The village has kept its character — a handful of traditional ryokan line the river, a Meiji-era wooden bathhouse still operates, and the pace of life follows the seasons. It is a destination for those seeking authentic onsen culture far from commercialized resort towns.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (October – November) — The Hidaka River gorge erupts in autumn color. Maple and zelkova trees frame the valley in fiery reds and oranges.
Winter (December – February) — Snow occasionally dusts the valley, creating a serene setting for outdoor bathing. The quiet season means the most intimate ryokan experience.
Summer (June – August) — Mountain air keeps the valley cooler than the coast. Firefly viewing along the river is a magical early-summer highlight.
Insider Tips
- The historic Ryujin Motoyu bathhouse offers day-use bathing — its wooden interior dates to the early 1900s.
- Bring the water home: bottled Ryujin spring water is sold locally and prized for its mineral balance.
- The scenic Gomadanzan Skyline drive connects Ryujin to Koya-san — a spectacular mountain-ridge road.
- Stay at a riverside ryokan with private rotenburo (outdoor bath) to hear the river current as you soak.
