Kawayu Onsen

4 tours available

Why Visit Kawayu Onsen

Kawayu Onsen is a hot spring village in the mountainous interior of Wakayama Prefecture, deep within the sacred Kumano region. What makes Kawayu unique is its river — the Oto River's gravel bed is naturally heated by underground volcanic activity, allowing bathers to dig their own onsen right in the riverbank and soak under open sky.

In winter, the village constructs the massive Sennin-buro, a giant open-air bath formed by damming a section of the river to create a communal hot spring large enough for a thousand bathers. Surrounded by forested mountains and the spiritual atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, Kawayu offers an onsen experience unlike anything else in Japan — raw, natural, and deeply connected to the landscape.

Best Time to Visit

Winter (December – February) — The Sennin-buro giant river bath is open only during these months. Soaking in steaming water while snow dusts the surrounding mountains is magical.

Spring & Autumn — Ideal weather for walking sections of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail, then recovering in the river hot springs afterward.

Summer (July – August) — The river is cool enough for swimming in some sections while hot in others, creating a natural contrast bath experience.

Insider Tips

  • checkBring a small shovel or use your hands to dig a pool in the riverbed — adjust the mix of hot spring and river water to find your perfect temperature.
  • checkThe Sennin-buro requires a swimsuit (unlike most Japanese onsen). Arrive early in the morning for the most peaceful experience.
  • checkCombine with a walk along the Kumano Kodo's Nakahechi route — Kawayu is perfectly positioned between Hongu Taisha and the trailheads.
  • checkStay at a ryokan with private river-view baths for the ultimate indulgence after a day of hiking the ancient pilgrimage paths.
